Douglas Rushkoff journalist for CNN writes the following interesting article on why he is quitting Facebook:

Through a new variation of the Sponsored Stories feature called Related Posts, users who “like” something can be unwittingly associated with pretty much anything an advertiser pays for. Like e-mail spam with a spoofed identity, the Related Post shows up in a newsfeed right under the user’s name and picture. If you like me, you can be shown implicitly recommending me or something I like — something you’ve never heard of — to others without your consent.

For now, as long as I don’t like anything myself, I have some measure of control over what those who follow me receive in my name or, worse, are made to appear to be endorsing, themselves. But I feel that control slipping away, and cannot remain part of a system where liking me or my work can be used against you.

The TechCrunch article clearly shows via screenshots of previous application permissions dialogs and the new ones, how they are eroding your privacy rights, by reducing the visibility of the permissions that Facebook applications request.

The campaign to get Facebook to sort out its many privacy issues, succeeded in getting a vote on their new “data use policy” document, and Facebook have now opened voting on their new “data use policy”:

Once again they are trying to pull a fast one by announcing the vote on a Friday evening when not many people are using Facebook, and also only announcing it to the few people who have “liked” the Facebook governance page, and they also are only giving 7 days to vote, in which time they require 30% of all active Facebook users to vote, otherwise they wont do anything.

Help spread the word about this, and lets get Facebook to listen.

You can easily hide / remove Trending Articles and Trending Videos on Facebook, using the FB Purity browser extension.

Just install FB Purity, then open the FB Purity options screen, by clicking the FB Purity link at the top of your newsfeed, then tick the “Hide Read an Article / Trending Articles” option, then click Save. This will hide the Read an Article stories, Trending articles and also Trending Videos stories and as a bonus it also hides other Facebook Actions / Frictionless Sharing apps, i.e the person x watched a video on website y , person x pinned something to pinterest etc etc.
